May we ask why you would like to speak French?

  • You have acquired a French-speaking son-in-law, or daughter-in-law…and you may soon have French speaking grandchildren.
  • You have been posted to France, Brussels, the United Nations or to some other Francophone country or institution.
  • You have bought a house in France perhaps, or are thinking of doing so.
  • You would like to read Madame Bovary or La Comédie Humaine in the original version.
  • You simply love the music of the language.

Who will you be speaking to?

  • Casual acquaintances met at hotels or on the slope, shop keepers, ticket sellers, neighbours?
  • Estate agents, plasterers, electricians and other service engineers?
  • Friends in the profession - doctors, lawyers, media people, politicians, academics?
  • Business associates and contacts?

Alliance Française d’Oxford Method

There are reasons why learning French at Alliance Française d’Oxford works : from the onset, students feel supported in their endeavour by their respective tutors who give each of their students clear linguistic objectives and defined tuition programmes. Tutors check the progress of their students through regular tests which also act as self-evaluations: so you know that you have learnt, that you have assimilated what you have learnt and that you have progressed from this level to that level.

Tutors use role plays (“mises en situation”) and authentic materials for the classes to be as close to time spent in France as geographically possible here in Oxford.

Tuition is given in French: this is the best way to consolidate and improve communication skills in everyday situations. This is very conducive to natural and lively interaction in French (of course) though English has to be used occasionally - to clarify certain grammatical points or explain complex syntactic rules.

We use Gourmet pubs, French restaurants and bars, visits to museums, book clubs and discussion groups to enhance every opportunity of recreating a moment in time on French territory.

Enrolment

Whether you join a small class or opt for private tuition, we invite all students — except for absolute beginners — to come in for a level evaluation test. This test is an essential part of the registration process as it establishes your own individual linguistic profile and level of proficiency.

This in turn determines the days and times of your class and enables a private tuition programme that will answer your specific needs and aims to be set up.

Please email us at french@afoxford or call us on 01865 310 946 to arrange a convenient time for your test and registration.
